First-Year Student Noor Atkinson Selected for Fulbright UK Summer Institute Program

Noor is one of 31 first and second-year students from across the United States selected to participate in this program. Participants will attend a 3-4 week education program at one of six UK host institutions: the University of Bristol Summer Institute, Queen's University Belfast Summer Institute, King’s College London Summer Institute, University of St Andrews Summer Institute, University of Birmingham Summer Institute, and Lancaster University Summer Institute.

Noor will attend the program at King's College London, titled "Modern Britain: Institutions, Power, & People." According to the program website, this Institute offers participants an "in-depth understanding of how Britain’s institutions, power, and its people have shaped a twenty-first century nation state."  Noor, who aspires to become a a public defender, will use this experience to "broaden her understanding of global justice systems and deepen her commitment to community-centered legal advocacy." While in the UK, Noor will live with other program participants at King's halls of residence, attend seminars taught by King's faculty, and participate in site visits to place of cultural and historical significance.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. Candidates must have a minimum 3.6GPA and have no or very little study/travel experience outside of North America, and be able to articulate how the program will better prepare them for their future goals. Noor is the 4th student selected for the UK Summer Institutes from Syracuse University since 2020.
